NTU Pro Ams Debating Championship 2017

  • Nanyang Technological University Singapore (map)

NTU Debating Society is proud to host the NTU Inter Tertiary Pro Ams Debating Championship 2017.

In its 12th edition this year, the NTU Pro-Ams aims to give novice speakers exposure to the world of debating, at an appropriate level of competitiveness. It serves as a platform for speakers to gain familiarity with the British Parliamentary style of debating, under the guidance of experienced debaters. As the World Universities Debating Championship (WUDC) is also held in the British Parliamentary style, experienced debaters also have the opportunity to brush up their skills.

The definition of an Am for the NTU Pro-Ams uses elimination clauses. An Amateur is NOT:

- Someone who has debated in three or more Open or Pro-Ams tournaments.

- Someone who has attended a tournament at the World or Regional level - WUDC, UADC, Australs, Asian BPs, PAUDC, Pan-Americans, etc etc.

- Someone who has represented Singapore at the WSDC, as part of the main five members in the team roster.

- Someone who has broken to the Open out-rounds of a major tournament in ANY debate format where the highest permissible age of participation is university level e.g. NTU DC, SMU Hammers, SMUDO, UiTM IV etc. (The exception is if the break was in a Pro-Am tournament e.g. NUS Pro Ams)

Anyone who passes the above clauses is eligible to be an Am. HOWEVER, the final decision lies with the Adjudication Core, which will take decisions in line with the spirit of Pro-Ams. The Adj Core is open to appeals; please contact the adjudication core beforehand, as appeals will not be accommodated on the day itself.
